Chapter Twenty-Two

Radiance

“I’m going with you, Eli! Croix is my son! I need to be there.”

“It’s too risky, Radiance. I won’t allow it. Plus you’re not well. Look at you,” he said, waving his hand before me. “You’re flushed, weak, and probably dehydrated. You passed out for several hours. You aren’t flying to Miami with us! The discussion is closed!”

I flopped down on the bed and covered my face with my hands as I cried my eyes out. I wanted to fly to Miami with Eli and the rest of the men, but he was determined that I wouldn’t. I needed him to understand that every minute I was away from Croix I lost a little piece of my soul. Why couldn’t he get it?

He sat down on the bed next to me. “Look at me, babe.”

I turned the other way defiantly.

“Radiance, I don’t have the patience nor am I in the mood for one of your temper tantrums. Now look at me!”

I turned around slowly to face him, but I made sure that the look in my eyes was lethal enough to stab him in his heart.

“You have to trust that I’m making the best decision for your safety. I can’t have you in harm’s way, sweetheart. I love you, and it’s my duty to always protect you.” He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.

My heart did a tap dance, and my spirit took flight at the sound of those three special words. Eli had finally professed his love for me, and I was overwhelmed with emotion. I allowed my tears of joy to fall freely and relaxed in his arms.

“Your mother will be here soon to watch after you while I’m gone. I love you, but I don’t trust you to stay here alone and behave.” He laughed deeply. “You’ll probably book a flight to Miami as soon as I leave if there’s no one here to stop you.”

I raised my head from his shoulder and pulled back to look at him head-on. “You know me too well.”

He smiled and nodded. “Of course I do. You’re my heart, Radiance. Every man knows his heart.”

“When will you guys be leaving?”

“Ivan, my regular pilot, wasn’t available, so Sergio had to find a substitute. The young man won’t be able to get here before five-thirty for a six o’clock takeoff. We have another two hours.”

“What’s the plan when you get to Ms. Lois’ house?”

“You don’t need to know that, sweetheart. The less you know, the better. Just trust me that we’ll find Croix and bring him back home to you.”

“What’s going to happen to Satchel?”

“That’s not your concern either.”

“Please don’t let Sergio and his posse kill him. No matter how terrible of a person Satchel is, he’s still Croix’s father. How will you be able to look that precious child in the eyes every day, knowing that you ordered his dad’s death?”

Eli released me and stood up. As he began to pace back and forth in front of me, I saw conflict in his handsome features.
