I pressed the base of his left small finger, I found it was very tender. This is the spot! So I put one needle at the base of his left 5th finger (at Hou Xi ). I put another 1.5 cun away from it. In Master Tung’s experience, he found it was synergistic to put two needles not too far away from each other. To find Hou Xi , have the patient make a loose fist. You’ll find Hou Xi in a depression proximal to the head of the metacarpal bone, at the junction of the light and dark skin and close to the last major crease made by the palm. The needles should be placed perpendicularly 0.5 to 0.7 cun deep.
There is a meridian in the body that goes from the head to the base of the neck to the shoulder blade to the back of arm and all the way to back of the hand, ending at the ring finger. (See Figure 24.3.) This meridian is known by several names, called

San Jiao , or Triple Burner or Triple Warmer . This is the only meridian that is not associated with a Western bodily organ, so there are many theories as to how it works. Coincidentally, Master Tung used three needles at the back of forearm, between the ulnar and radial bones for neck pain (which I will explain later) so putting needles along this meridian should unblock the flow that is causing the neck pain.
This 26-year-old computer programmer was very thin. I worked a little to find the spaces between the two bones and inserted two needles along the meridian at Wai Guan and Zhi Gou . (See Figure 24.4) Wai Guan is 2 cun proximal to the dorsal crease of the wrist, in the depression between the radius and ulna, on the radial side. Needling depth for this point is 0.5 to 1 cun. Zhi Gou is 3 cun proximal to the dorsal crease of the wrist, in the depression between the radius and ulna, toward the ulnar side from Wai Guan . Needling depth for this point is 0.8 to 1.2 cun.
