Adjuvant drugs

Adrenaline

• Slows absorption of LA solution, thereby increasing duration of action and decreasing potential for toxicity.

• Less effective with longer-acting LA solutions.

• Also has an analgesic property due to α2 -adrenoceptor agonism.

• Avoid in extremities such as finger and penile blocks—risk of ischaemia.

Corticosteroids

• Enhance the pain relieving effects of LAs by anti-inflammatory and also by direct analgesic effects.

• May also prevent or decrease both peripheral and central neuronal hyperexcitability.
