And once you have gotten everything off your chest, talked it through, and hopefully set some new boundaries and expectations, let it go! I can’t stress this strongly enough. Rehashing the past in new arguments is a sure relationship killer. No one wants to feel like their spouse, friend, or business partner is keeping some kind of lifetime list of their transgressions. If you are prepared to continue the relationship, then you need to be prepared to put the issues that are resolved to bed.

Norma’s Notes: THE MOTHER/DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP
My mother and I were very close. We lived together most of my life, we traveled together, and we talked about everything. But I never forgot that she was my mother because she never let me. She would call me out, tell me off, but also give me advice and comfort me like no one else. I was very respectful of her, and at times, I feared her. We had boundaries and we knew what they were. She was the mother and I was her daughter.
I often hear women say that they are “friends” with their daughters, and I think that is problematic. Friends do not have the same boundaries or rules as do mothers and daughters. A mother knows best. A friend does not. Children need to know who is the boss and have someone to look up to and keep them in line. Friends do not serve that same purpose. Telling your child that you are their friend and then trying to exercise authority is very challenging. God knows what my mother would have had to say about it!
