Coping Mechanisms
I’ve definitely picked up a fair few tricks on how to cope with anxiety, panic attacks and problems in general. It goes without saying that what works for me might not work for somebody else, but here are a few ways I have managed to heal myself.
MEDITATION
A big reliever for me has been meditation, even if it’s just for three minutes a day. I use the free version of the Headspace app (no, this isn’t #spon. You buying the book was amazing enough!), and I go particularly crazy with this before I do a live event – it helps create a small gap in time between the persistent dashes to the toilet!
LESS CAFFEINE
Despite my serious addiction to caffeine, I have found that when one is overburdened, lessening your caffeine intake does wonders, as does a huge glass of cold water, or a wonderful chamomile tea.
JOURNALLING
One thing my first therapist taught me was to keep a diary, even if you just scribble random words in it. I used to journal every single night before bed without fail, and it’s a foolproof method of getting things off your mind . . . and into Rose’s. I dump my thoughts onto paper and leave them there, allowing space for beautiful dreams and a tranquil sleep.
ROUTINE
My therapist taught me the value of a good routine, to get some wind-down time before bed to allow your mind to take a break for a bit. Unfortunately I’m not too great at following my own advice, so my good routine has flown out the window. But it was great while it lasted and I strongly recommend to anyone who has trouble sleeping that a hot bath and a good, but semi-boring book before bed can work wonders.
