HONOLULU

THE ‘BIG ISLAND’ LAY HIDDEN beneath mist as I passed round its eastern and northern flanks. In the northeast trades, I was now on a lee shore. As a precaution, I called the US Coastguard, explained the situation and agreed to maintain a four-hourly reporting schedule. If the mast (or engine) failed, I would need a tow into port.

The winds accelerated between the islands, kicking the waters of Molokai Channel into a moody, choppy confusion. Circular currents neutralised the Hydrovane’s attempts to hold course so I hand-steered Barrabas through the night of Sunday 7th May. At dawn, the lights of Oahu’s coastal settlements gave way to a raw and breathtaking landscape: a mountainous, volcanic spine drifting to a flattened coastal plain thickly covered with vegetation.
