Adam visited his parents a few days later. While he was there, he slipped into their bathroom to retrieve hair specimens. Next he prepared three clearly marked hair samples in plastic bags: his mother’s, his father’s, and his own. Then he downloaded a do-it-yourself kit, completed the form, included a cashier’s check, and prepared an envelope to mail everything to a DNA lab in north Omaha.

“You seem anxious to get the results,” Peter observed. “Why not just drop off the kit at the lab? It’s only about ten miles from here.”

“I want to make sure this is completely anonymous,” Adam explained. “Someone I know might recognize me there. Or I might be caught on security cameras. I’m using a fake name, a cashier’s check, and a new email account to receive the results. For my parents’ sake I don’t want this information in the public domain. It’s just for us.”

“What happens if you aren’t a match for one or both of your parents?” Peter asked.

Inhaling deeply, Adam rubbed his cheek. “Then I’ll ask them for an explanation. All my life people have been telling me I look a lot like my mother, but nothing like my father. If they ask why I had our DNA tested, I’ll tell them I’ve had this nagging feeling I’m adopted. Then I’ll listen to their explanation.”

“For all your sakes, I hope both your parents are a match,” Peter muttered. “The last thing this country needs is another broken family. We make such a good foursome whenever we get together. I hate to lose that since I don’t have any family of my own now.”

“Suddenly this is all about you?” Adam squawked. “What about me? What if the man I’ve been calling Dad all these years is just a placeholder? I deserve to know who my real father is, don’t I?”

“Didn’t you tell me your mother spent some time in New York? What if it turns out Donald Trump is your biological father?”

“I’ll jump off our balcony,” Adam threatened.

Peter nodded sympathetically. “No matter what the results are, I’ll still love you just as you are.”

“Even if you find out I’m Adam, the Bastard of West Omaha?”

“Especially then!” Peter teased. “I’ve always wanted to date a man with a title.”
