CHAPTER 21

Friday afternoon, Jack emerged from the athletic department offices after a long talk with the department director. Spring break was almost over, and so was his business major. Jack glanced at the yellow sticky note in his hand with various email addresses on it. He still had time to apply for the department scholarship, which the director all but guaranteed him, and to register for summer courses.

Jack headed outside and sat heavily on a bench. Somehow, his dad’s attempt at parenting had gotten through to him and Jack was ready for a change. He’d been so afraid of chasing the wrong things, he had given up pursuing anything at all. Not any more.

The slow week had given him a chance to pray, to think, and to talk to Isaac and Micah more. They had both encouraged him to go for it. Apparently, God wasn’t against football. Micah had even sent him a list of verses about races and athletes.

“Jack, if God gives you a talent, he doesn’t want you to bury it,” Micah had said. “You can do all things to his glory. Maybe God took football away to bring you to him. That doesn’t mean he took it away forever.”

Micah had also repeated words that Jack remembered from high school. Back when he had been mad about his mom’s death, Micah had told him God was rarely the one to take. That was the devil’s job: to steal and kill. God gave—comfort and hope.

If Jack timed everything right and took enough summer courses, changing his major would only add one semester to his graduation timeline. Then, with a teaching certificate and kinesiology degree, he would be on his way to a coaching job.

Typing an email to his advisor and the financial department, Jack said one more quick prayer before hitting send. Isaac’s advice about God’s calling applied to school, too. For once, Jack had peace about school. More than that, he was actually excited about it.
