It was 18 June 2007. In the chill of early morning in Melbourne’s CBD, the barrel of the gun was hot under the biker’s chin. He could not be sure how many rounds he had fired in that deadly fusillade. Christopher Hudson had been shot in the face by someone else before and survived, but this time the .40 calibre bullet would rip through his brain and explode out the top of his head in a geyser of blood and gore on the shop window behind him. It would all be over then, all this drama and bullshit that had consumed his life.

With four spurts of orange flame from his gun, solicitor Brendan Keilar, Dutch backpacker Paul de Waard and Hudson’s sometime girlfriend Kara Douglas had fallen at his feet.

He turned his back on the carnage and began walking along Flinders Lane towards Queen Street. The No. 55 tram to Coburg rattled up alongside him. The passengers had heard the shots and were now confronted by the killer. Hudson pointed his firearm at the tram, sending people diving to the floor in wild panic.

Shooting three people had been a jagged impulse, but Hudson apparently knew what he had to do now. This Hells Angel’s last act would be pure free will. And Hell would be well populated with brothers.

But when he pulled the trigger, nothing happened. He was out of bullets—in his psychotic rage he had emptied the six-shot magazine, police said later.

He ran down the street, waving his gun at people in the way, but it was an impotent gesture. Despite his fearsome tattoos, his bulging physique and his firearm, the power and rage were draining out of him. He was a true outlaw now—a lone fugitive from justice. He was a solitary figure in an alien landscape. He took off his jacket and carefully wrapped the gun in it, then he left this small bundle on a building site on Flinders Street.
