Chapter 18

Johnny and Amelia sat disheartened in the waiting room after the ICU staff told them they couldn’t see their Mother. Apparently nursing personnel had their hands full. Johnny tucked the drawstring into his sweat pants and tightened the shoelace on his sneaker. He glanced around. All the waiting rooms were beginning to look the same: plastic plants, maroon-cushioned seats besides upholstered couches, and clumps of children’s toys in brightly colored corner containers.

“Sounds like something’s going on,” Mel said.

Mel had sharper hearing than Johnny, but he did hear voices filled with alarm and the rolling of equipment. He watched his sister’s slim figure hustle to the hallway where she peered towards the ICU doors and saw two young women with blue surgical hats pushing a red cart. The cart jostled over the lip of the doorway mat as items on the top bounced.

One woman said, “We’re going to do what we mock practiced for over and over again.”

“But still,” the other young woman replied, “handling it is a different ballgame.” She grasped the corner of the cart as they flew around the turn.

Amelia settled back into the chair next to Johnny. “Those hospital people sure are in a hurry. There must be an emergency.”
