Chapter Ten

Monday

JOSH’S face lit up. “Aw, thanks. I was just about to have a break.” He winked. “You must have read my mind.”

His genuine appreciation sent a rush of warmth through Christian, who laughed. “I’m beginning to realize you drink as much coffee as I do. Thank you for setting up the coffee machine last week, by the way. I’d had enough of instant by then.” He sat on the edge of the tub and handed Josh a mug.

Josh shuddered. “Instant coffee. Shouldn’t be allowed.” He took a sip and smiled. “See? Now that tastes good.” He leaned over and patted the toilet. “She’s good to go.”

Christian snickered. “And there you go, personalizing inanimate objects again. She? You’ve decided my new toilet is a she?” The vanity looked good—in fact, it was much better than the original. He smiled. “I love my new bathroom.”

Josh beamed. “Yeah? Great. And now you have no shower curtain to pull down.” He gave Christian a hard stare. “And you are not to go slipping in the tub and crashing into your new glass door, you got me?”

He’d lain in his bed that night, picturing the crowded Arboretum, its lawns covered with people sitting or lying on rugs or blankets, all eyes focused on the huge white screen. I was there. I was really there.

Josh leaned against the bathtub, his mug in hand. “My friends Nate, Logan, and Dylan met me in Back Bay to go bowling on Saturday night.”

“Bowling? Really?”

Josh inclined his head to regard Christian, smirking. “Have you ever been bowling?”

“When I was a kid, sure.” He could recall being grossed out by the thought of wearing bowling shoes that someone else had recently worn. One plus point had been the sodas. His parents hadn’t allowed him or his brother to have soda at home, and both boys always begged for the beverages whenever the occasion presented itself.

Josh chuckled. “Trust me. When we go bowling, we do it in style. For one thing, at Kings we can have cocktails.” He grinned. “Sounds kinda civilized, huh? And let’s not forget the food. Man, their wings are to die for.”

“Wings? Are we still talking about bowling?” Christian loved Josh’s facial expression, the way his smile crinkled the skin around his eyes, and the look of pleasure in those rich brown eyes.

Josh groaned. “Oh God, they are amazing! Sure, you got your boring buffalo wings, but then they have Korean BBQ, spicy garlic parmesan, Thai peanut, baked Caribbean jerk, sesame ginger….
