The problem with these beliefs is that they don’t serve me anymore. In fact, they often become self-fulfilling prophesies: I cocreate the very thing I don’t want to have happen. And the more I do that, the more cemented becomes the belief. I’m sure my fear of public speaking comes from continuous affirmation of a negative core belief.

I am learning to work compassionately with my tender spot—to be mindful of when I’m triggered, and to speak kindly to myself when I am: “Ahh, there you are again, childhood wound. I’m so sorry you’re feeling hurt, Marianne. Your words do matter, and I’m so proud of you for speaking in front of a large group of people.” Through self-compassionate storytelling, I am able to reframe the situation and become my own hero, rather than remaining a victim.

Sometimes I even discover that the triggering situation isn’t what I thought it was. For example, regarding the situation I just described, I later found out that the female retreat leader hadn’t been talking to me at all but to someone else, someone who was holding a second microphone.

What is your tender spot?

What would happen if you gave up your negative core beliefs?
