The Cirrus saga was my original reason for going to the city—and after my first visits as a reporter, I returned as a customer. I got in the early-purchasers’ queue and bought one of the first SR20s off the assembly line; as Deb will attest, the two factors that swayed her to approval were the presence of the parachute and the plane’s comfortable interior, which was designed to be like a nicer modern car (rather than an ancient pickup truck). I went to get that plane from the factory in Duluth as soon as it was ready, in November 2000, but I ended up on an unplanned stay for nearly ten days, caught by a persistent ice storm that made it too risky to fly back to our home of the time, in Berkeley, California.

For airplane reasons and otherwise, Deb and I kept finding reasons to return: in the summertime, for the boating; in the winter, to hear, in amazement (for me), about people sitting in igloos for ice fishing or roaring across the drifts in their snowmobiles. Deb knew all these stories and could readily add to them from her own experience, in a Minnesota accent she usually keeps under wraps.

We came back as part of our 2014 travels to see what else had happened in Duluth, and how its story fit into what we had been hearing elsewhere. So we asked Gary Doty, now gray-haired fifteen years after I first met him, what else he had been thinking when the Cirrus move was afoot, and what the turning points had been in the city’s movement forward.
