The church at right has been replaced with another church, and most of the trees have been replaced by widened streets and general urban development, as has much of this part of Orange County. This is Newport Boulevard at Eighteenth Street in Costa Mesa around 1963 and today. Most of the smaller businesses have been replaced with newer businesses, though the area still remains a bustling commercial hub of the area. Historically, Costa Mesa surged in population during and after World War II as thousand of soldiers trained at nearby Santa Ana Army Air Base and then returned to the city after the war with their families.
