Proctoring Clinicians

It is ideal for clinicians to become competent with procedures during professional training. However, primary care fields have not routinely included LARC training [31, 32]. IUD skill acquisition, confidence, and competency are generally obtained after 3–10 proctored IUD placements, although this may vary by provider and specialty training [33].

On-site proctoring, supervised by experienced providers

One option for skills training is proctoring—hands-on IUD placement training, supervised by experienced providers, during patient visits. This can be done in a number of different ways depending on the options in the area. Proctoring within your clinical setting, by existing clinical staff (when available), will minimize the need for outside credentialing, malpractice coverage, and memorandums of understanding [34].
