Generalkommando Flakkorps II

Flakregiment 6 (Ostend)

Flakregiment 201 (Calais)

Flakregiment 202 (Dunkirk)

Flakregiment 136 (Boulogne)

Well aware of the need for adequate protection of beaches and troops during the landing, the Luftwaffe had requested the transport of fifty-two flak batteries along with the First Wave of troops as early as July. The Luftwaffe had to make do with only 30 per cent of this strength; the rest were to cross with the Second Wave forces.

‘Provisional Directive 16 of the Army High Command (AOK) on Operation Sealion’ of 9 September foresaw the mission of Flakkorps II as essentially:

. . . the suppression of enemy armour and fixed installations, besides providing air defence. Thus early deployment of these flak units is necessary and they should be set up as quickly as possible to ensure this.

Flakkorps II will provide air defence during loading and unloading of the landing craft and will also support the Sixteenth Army’s offensive. The weaker elements shall protect the fleet during the crossing.

Its nine heavy and four light detachments will protect the massed troops and ships as well as loading operations at Ostend, Dunkirk and Calais. Two mixed detachments, each equipped with three 8.8 cm Flak batteries and two 2 cm Flak batteries will be assigned to each First Wave army corps (distributed among the two echelons). These Flakkorps will provide air defence during the crossing, the unloading and the assault on the British coastline, then attack British aircraft, naval forces and tanks during the advance.

Together with other units in subsequent waves, it will provide air defence of harbours.

Those units which will co-operate are Flakregiment 201 and VII Corps; Flakregiment 202 with XIII Corps; and Flakregiment 6 with the V and XLI Corps. Regimental commanders are to liaise with the army corps and make recommendations on the use of their forces for air defence.
