The gate to Stalag 12A, Lindbergh, Germany.

We received no medical treatment. They sorted out the soldiers who absolutely could not walk. One of my ammunition carriers had a piece of shrapnel under his kneecap. I would've cut it out if I had found a knife but I couldn't find one. Those who had been sorted out were left behind when they moved the rest of us. The ammunition carrier was one of those left. The Germans realized they were going to lose that section of land soon anyway so they left them to be picked up by Allied army coming through.

We were loaded into boxcars each holding about forty men. Each car had originally been made to hold eight cows, so they were very small boxcars. If we sat close together, there was room for us to sit down. There were no facilities in these boxcars - no food, no water, and no restrooms. We were locked in this car for seven days, never having the door opened, to make our way to Neubrandenburg, Germany. In route, we went through Berlin where the RAF was bombing. Bombs were dropped indiscriminately and, by that time, Berlin had been pretty well destroyed. We had a 6 x 12 inch hole in the boxcar that we could see through, allowing two or three guys to see out. The Germans who were guarding us were frightened and ran for a safer place, leaving us sitting on the tracks in the boxcar. We were lucky that we were not hit during the bombing. At the end of the seven days, the door to the boxcar was opened, and we were released into the Stalag 2A POW camp in Neubrandenburg. Before I was captured, I thought I was in really good physical condition, but when I jumped from the boxcar after those seven days, I fell flat on my face. Mostly British and American prisoners were held in this camp.
