Rædan lay in bed, thinking this was possibly the worst decision he’d made in his life. He was unaccustomed to having a woman in his house. And a child. How was he ever going to sleep again, with Rebekah in the bed just across the room from him? He’d known torture before, but this was far worse. He was still wound up from those men daring to come to his home and trying to take her for themselves. He had been so determined not to let anything bad happen to her, he’d been pretty brutal in his treatment of Ogden. But he would defend his home and its new inhabitants every night if he had to. He would do anything to keep them safe.

As she’d lingered on the edge of the longhouse earlier, her head bowed, his heart had gone out to Rebekah.

She had been stoic on the journey here and then she’d had to face all those strangers staring at her, as if they’d never seen a Saxon woman before. Memories had crashed over him at how he’d felt when he’d first arrived here. He knew exactly what she was going through, as he’d once been in that position, too. He’d felt worthless and at the mercy of the people in that hall. Now, those people respected him. He hoped it would be the same for her. He would do whatever he had to do to make it so.

He hated that she’d had to suffer the humiliation of Ogden demanding her as his reward. The man couldn’t take his beady eyes off her and Rædan wanted to kill him, just for looking at her like that. But she’d dealt with their greedy gazes and wild whisperings with strength and dignity. Glancing his way, she’d given him a tight smile and he knew she was concerned—for herself, but mainly for her child. He knew she would defend Gytha with her life. They both would. It was why he’d taken her arm in his, squeezed it tight, to offer her some of his strength. And he’d been glad when he’d finally got them through his door this evening.

He closed his eyes and her face filled his mind. She looked like a different person to the noblewoman who’d greeted him in the Saxon hall just a few days before. Now her clothes and her hair were all mussed up from being out at sea for days, her skin bronzed by the sun and the wind, and he knew she was exhausted. But even though her eyes were heavy and her lips taut, she was still the most stunning woman he’d ever seen. Tomorrow, he would source them some new clothes, he thought. He had come to realise how important clothes were to feeling as though you belonged, as something to shape your personality. Having none while on that slave ship had made him feel degraded, worthless.

He threw the furs off him and padded over to the curtain and peered round it.
