The trail to Soapstone Lake is a pleasant and easy backpacking outing that makes an excellent choice for families with children. The trail to the lake is short but diverse, including areas of dense forest, some relatively open second-growth woodlands, a small meadow, and a lovely creek, all leading to a lake at trail’s end. Wildlife is common and the lake is surprisingly scenic, so there is plenty to appreciate, regardless of your age or hiking abilities. Be aware that because the Clatsop State Forest manages this land as a working forest, hikers should expect periodic trail closures due to timber harvest activity. Call ahead for the latest conditions.
