“That means nothing…” I state, finding it difficult to get out of my own head.

“He called her earlier tonight. Probably because he didn’t want to put his threats in text. I know how you read the conversation, Jake. But try again, imagine that at some point he called her to threaten her then read it again.”

I do. I grab the phone and reread the whole thing from a different perspective. The way she tried to ignore him and pleaded to talk about it another time.

Two please’s asking to talk about it later? That’s leave me the fuck alone in Jamie’s language.

And the picture of the email. Of course that’s a threat.

She looked so unwell tonight but I thought it was because of the rejection letter she received this morning.

“He’s blackmailing her,” I huff out. Jamie might not be cheating on me, but the anxiety and anger don’t go away. “He…” I chuckle, feeling myself falling into insanity. “He blackmailed my girlfriend into sending him pictures of her in her underwear.”

My three best friends are looking at me like I’ve lost it. I think I have.

“You should go talk to Jamie. At least unlock the damn door and untie her,” Chris says softly.

“Oh no,” I shake my head. “Absolutely not.”

“Are you fucking dumb?” Ozy snaps. “If you don’t let her out, I will.”

“No one is letting her out.”

“For god’s sake, why?” Luke says as he puts the phone down.

I smile at my best friends as I let common sense escape my body slowly, replaced by electric insanity.

“Because we’re going to find the guy and we’re going to make him regret even looking at my girl. And if Jamie gets out of that room, she’s going to stop us.”

“Jake,” Chris sighs.

We all look at each other, and I feel the moment they shift and understand I’m not backing out of this.

“Alright,” Ozy shrugs. “Let’s fucking do it.” Of course, she’s my ride or die. Any stupid shit I want to do, she’s got my back.

“He won’t understand what’s coming for him.” Luke nods sternly.

We turn to Chris, waiting for the only wise one in our group to give us the go ahead. I can see right and wrong battling in his eyes. Eventually, his Superman complex takes over. “Let’s find him.”

They’re simple words, but to our group it means everything when calm and collected Chris Murray has our backs.

I grab the phone and turn to them. “We could drive to there tonight. Make him meet us somewhere. It’s only a four-hour drive at this time.”

Ozy scoffs. “Four hours there, four hours back, who knows how many hours torturing the asshole. Do you think I can disappear for that long without having Sam, Lik, and Rach declaring me missing?”

“You used to disappear on us all the time,” I snap back.
