Chapter Ten

Sofia

My Bug had gone home with Edie, so we took Hunter’s car to the hospital. As he drove, I watched him in silence. I was sure he had to be upset by his employees being taken, but he seemed to be doing his best to hide that. With his jaw clenched and his eyes focused on the road, it was difficult to see much more than grim determination. I had always admired his strength; I just wondered what had happened to make him think feeling anything at all was a weakness.

As soon as we parked I saw Edie walking toward us across the parking lot, looking about as cheerful as Hunter did.

Hunter got out first and Edie gave him a curt nod, then focused all of her attention on me once I was out.

“I don’t know if it’s gonna be in your favor or not, but your boyfriend hired ex-military and a cop, so they’re making great witnesses,” she said.

Hunter came around to my side of the car, frowning. “You’ve already been in there talking to them?”

“I don’t live far from here, so I got here long before you did,” she said, then turned back to me. “If there’s anything you guys need to hide about this, I worry it might come out. They’re being as detailed and thorough as they can be about every little thing they saw.”

“The only things we have to hide wouldn’t be taken seriously by cops anyway,” I assured Edie, though I noticed Hunter looked a bit doubtful beside me.

“Come on,” he said, then started for the hospital. We followed.

As we walked, Edie went on, finally speaking directly to Hunter. “You’re gonna be asked if you have any enemies and can think of why anyone would target your company. Just be honest. If you try to look too squeaky clean, they might not believe you and dig more.”

Hunter sighed and sounded tired when he responded, “We’re private security. Anybody who had a problem with one of our clients could target us.”

“Yeah, that’s good,” she said. “Give them all the mundane details, let them poke around and get bored.”

Before we went through the doors, Edie grabbed my arm to stop me. Hunter caught sight of the motion from the corner of his eye and paused to turn back toward us. I gave her a curious look.

“I’m not happy about trying to fuck up an investigation,” she said, looking from me to Hunter. “So while you go in and pretend you know a hell of a lot less than you do, Sofia’s going to stay out here and tell me all the real details.”

I shrugged off her hand, then gave Hunter a small nod. She was a human, as he had pointed out before, but she was also a formidable pyromancer and a cop. I trusted her as much as I could when she wasn’t part of my own pack and there was too much to gain by having her aware and on our side. “Go on.
