As I picked up the clipping from Mr. Watanabe's North China Standard—it was an editorial headed TRIAL DEMANDED—I thought again of the boisterous cocktail party where I had first encountered the little Japanese, That autumn afternoon at Councillor Hori's when Watanabe had been showing me the kakomonos seemed a thousand years away from this imprisoning cage of a room. Watanabe wrote:

The detention of two American journalists, one of them a woman, by the Chinese police, without pretense or arraignment or trial, or without even the formality of a charge, is a rank piece of injustice for which the American Legation is equally guilty with the Chinese.

In the case itself we are not concerned. The parties may be guilty of all kinds of misdeeds. But Mrs. Mildred Mitchell and Mr. Wilbur Burton, two young American newspaper people, have been confined in rooms in the Hotel Du Nord for three days after suffering the indignity of the most scrupulous personal examination. They have not been permitted to communicate with their friends. They have been denied the right of bail...

Quite likely Peking's American correspondents will see to it that their home papers are given the details, and it is more than likely that the American people will raise particularly large clouds of dust about this treatment imposed on their fellows while their lawful protectors apparently acquiesced.5
