2. I should make clear that I am not here attempting to demonize Paul while sanctifying Jesus. My aim, in other words, is not somehow to claim that Jesus “got Christianity right” whereas Paul corrupted it. There is, once again, no essence of Christianity to “get right.” My aim, on the contrary, is to understand what it was about Christian declaration that enabled it to become understood transcendently rather than immanently, or as identitarian rather than diasporic. As will hopefully be made clear in what follows, Pauline thought is not a contravention of something that was already self-consciously diasporic so much as an ambivalent, internally conflictual attempt—and one, I will contend, that is ultimately unsatisfying—to think consistently an inchoate problematic.
