TONY’S BARBER SHOP

Bruce ran down to Tony’s Barber Shop. It was just around the corner, on Adams Avenue.

Tony was busy cutting hair.

“Hello, Bruce,” he said. “You want a haircut?”

“Not today,” said Bruce. “I want to ask you something. Will you let me work here? Will you let me shine shoes?”

“This isn’t a big shop,” said Tony. “Boys don’t stay here very long because there isn’t enough work to keep them busy.”

“I think I can keep busy,” said Bruce.

“All right, if you want to try,” said Tony. “You can use the shoe shine stand there in the corner. I’ll let you keep all the money you make.”

Bruce ran home. He told Pinky and Eddie and Joe, “I’ve got a job.”

He went out and bought a shoe brush. He bought two kinds of shoe polish—black and brown. At home he tore an old shirt into shoe rags. On a piece of cardboard he made a sign:
