That night, Silloo brought all three children into her bed. She lay alongside Rustom, stroking his hair. Aram and Ana were both asleep. Rustom stared at the ceiling.

“Mummy, why do those men keep coming here? Why did that man want to shoot me?”

Silloo wrapped her arms around her young son, shuddering at the image of the gun to his head. “They are fighting for their country, this country, and they are angry,” she said. “Very angry.”

“But we didn’t do anything to them. Mummy, I’m scared. I want Daddy to come home now.”

“I know, my love, so do I. We must be patient and take care of each other. We know that we are good people, and we have to believe that there are good people that will help us out of this. Now, try to sleep, my sweet boy. I am right here by your side.”

Rustom closed his eyes and nuzzled into his mother. She held him tight, tears silently streaking her cheeks and wetting the pillow beneath her. They had been very lucky today, lucky that they were still breathing, still alive, but luck was not going to be enough. She needed to keep her children safe, and in her heart, she knew that there was only one way to do that. Tomorrow, she would call Mr. Mardden and ask him to come over to discuss her plan.
