AS MUCH AS SHE DIDN’T want it to be true, Cole was right. RatManchou prepared the venison steaks beautifully. Alyssalee hadn’t had a substantial meal in days, and the steak garnished with wild potatoes was perfect. Caleb sat to her left, and Sophie was on her right, with Cole opposite her at the table. The meal was praised repeatedly, and a lot of small talk occurred. Clearly, she was being treated with kid gloves.

Caleb pulled out a six-inch dagger that glimmered in the ambient light. The word Undivine, neatly engraved in black, block letters across the blade, caught her attention. Alyssalee observed in awe as Caleb sectioned the steak effortlessly—surgically, with the impressive knife.

Snapping back to her current worries, she asked, “How long do you think we can stay here?” with zero levity in her voice. The smiles quickly washed away from the faces of the group at the table. The more they stayed ahead of UNUM, the less chance she would be pressured into using her unruly abilities. This was what she hoped, at least. There was no possibility in her mind that she would ever be used as a weapon again. But she loved this group of new friends and didn’t want to be put in a position to let them down.

“We are leaving just before dawn.” Standing to address the larger group of Undivine, Cole eagerly thundered, “Team, we have unlocked a new achievement.” He paused for effect, slowly looking across the group. “We have made UNUM’s global most wanted list.” At that announcement, there were cheers and hollers across the group. “And with this, we are facing a high-risk operating environment. We are at threat-level delta. Stay vigilant. Stay alive,” he finished, returning to his meal.

Am I imagining this? Alyssalee wondered. She swore that Sophie had inched closer to her as she could now feel the warmth of her body. The sight of red seeping through her bandages caused a gasp of alarm from Alyssalee.

“Let’s finish up. Your bandages need to be changed. I’ll help,” Alyssalee urged. Sophie nodded.

They navigated down a makeshift path cut through the bushes. They made this camp in haste, and it didn’t receive the comforts of the former one. As Sophie followed behind, Alyssalee shielded her from further injuries caused by the underbrush, taking on a few new scratches. Finally, they reached the medic’s tent. They were alone as the feast held the Undivine’s full attention.

It took Alyssalee a few moments to unpin the bandages that covered Sophie’s midsection. She glanced up to find an ocean of emerald-green looking at her. The girl’s intensity held her in place. Despite her desire to not pull away, discomfort compelled her to do so. The bandages were carefully removed, and Alyssalee groaned at the gnarled wound on Sophie’s side. She located the antiseptic and daubed the injury with cotton balls.

“You missed the memorial... Sammy, Tigershark, and Raffy,” Sophie said, on the verge of tears.

Alyssalee didn’t know them, but she was ashamed to have missed the memorial.
