5.4.2.2 Intervention

For patients at an early stage of the disease with minimal cognitive and/or motor limitations, the occupational therapy intervention focus can be to maintain and improve skills during the activity performance. However, in patients with more severe symptoms the approach has to be compensatory. From the perspective of a compensatory approach, the activities should be graduated and the physical and social environment modified in order to better support the patient’s preserved abilities in the activity. Promoting participation in appropriate activities with tailored strategies can increase the quality of life of the patient. Occupational therapy can contribute to establish an appropriate routine, individualized cueing, and fatigue management techniques, apply a “single task” approach, and graduate the activity [27].
