CHAPTER 9

Judgment

Raviel was desperate to keep a hold on her mind, fearing that with each time slip, a little more of her would dissolve away. If she lost her memories again, would she ever find them? Although she still felt the molecular-level decay of her being, on this journey through time her mind seemed to stay anchored. Without the Protector, she felt particularly vulnerable, and yet somehow, Ell Yon was still with her. Remarkably, her mind began to fill with a collage of scenes, glimpses of what was happening to the Rayleans as she slipped past. Watching key events unfold before her eyes angered her. In spite of her anger, there was also a sense of excitement and reborn hope that accompanied the frustration for what she saw. When the world formed once again around her, she was still whole, her mind and memories intact. Lil was gone, but the Navi Hall of Meditation didn’t seem to have changed much. Raviel knelt down, taking a moment to recover. If what Sovereign Ell Yon had shown her was the extent of the time slip, just decades, not centuries, had passed. She stood, considering her next actions, the flame of anger still flickering in her eyes. She went to the alcove that Daeson had previously arranged and placed her hand on the bio panel. A section of the wall slid silently away and she gasped.

“Oh Daeson!”

At the bottom of the alcove was a Protector…silent, waiting. Was it functional, she wondered? She carefully lifted the treasured vambrace from its resting place. Reverently, she pushed the Protector onto her right forearm. Any question as to its authenticity was immediately dispelled, for the mind of Ell Yon flooded her thoughts with affirming judgment. Raviel took a moment to absorb the Immortal’s call then went to the pillars that allowed her to look out onto the grand city of Jalem. She inhaled the crisp cool fall air of the country, then made straightaway for the palace that was occupied by the leader of Rayl, Prefect Luas. As her thoughts turned to the man she had called a friend, she struggled in her heart. Across five decades of time Ell Yon had revealed a vivid portrayal of Luas’s actions as prefect and Raviel sorrowed, for the man had allowed the position of power to ruin him. Thoughts of Daeson, Tig, Kyrah, and Rivet vied for her attention, but she concluded that they were either here already or would be soon so she instead focused on the mission set before her.

Once she reached the Palace, guards tried to detain her, but she would have none of it. Multiple bursts of Protector power quickly put the entire palace in a state of pandemonium as Raviel arrived at two massive doors, the only remaining protection for a prefect petrified of a Navi with a message and a mission. Raviel burst into the room and marched straight up to stand before an aged Prefect Luas. Counselors, generals, and palace guards waited, nervously fingering their weapons yet not willing to invite calamity.
