In the second part we hear of a conversation between Frigg and Odin where they are talking of the fortunes of their two foster sons, Agnar and Geirroeth; Agnar lives in a cave, but Geirroeth is king, and now we suspect (though the tale does not tell us) that the goodman was Odin (who advised Geirroeth to dispose of his brother) and the goodman’s wife was Frigg. But Frigg provokes Odin by saying that although Geirroeth is king he is mean and selfish in gift giving which is an unpardonable failure in a king. Odin elects to go in disguise to check on his foster son, and appears at Geirroeth’s court as an old man called Grimnir; but unknown to Odin, Frigg had sent a message ahead warning Geirroeth to beware of such a stranger, and the king treats Grimnir abominably, forcing him to sit between two great fires to try to force him to talk. Grimnir keeps silence, and after some days of this torture, an Agnar who is said to be Geirroeth’s son, takes pity and gives Grimnir water. Then Grimnir reveals himself as Odin and frees himself. In alarm, Geirroeth accidentally falls on his own sword and dies, and Agnar (either the brother or the son) becomes king.
