Chronological Order

The chronological method of organization presents information based on the passage of time, usually from earlier time to later. Although only a few types of nonfiction books, such as histories, biographies, or travelogues, feature chronological order, many books use a chronological system of organization in at least one chapter, for instance, in a history chapter. Activists Emily Kay and Anita Saville used chronological order in their chapter summaries for the compelling biography of Molly Yard, former president of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in their proposal We’ll Remember in November: Molly Yard’s Gift to Women’s Rights. Beginning with Molly Yard’s early childhood in China, the book progresses through time to Yard’s Democratic-party and civil-rights activism. It chronicles the history of her leadership of NOW and beyond.

Memoir and autobiography also rely upon a chronological method of organizaiton, but often in conjunction with, or secondary to, “story order.”
