Those in favor of giving women the vote far outweighed the naysayers. Representatives from suffrage groups across the West stood outside the convention hall giving impromptu speeches and outlining the reasons why the time had come for women in Utah to be allowed to vote.

On April 18, 1895, delegates at the state’s constitutional convention voted in favor of woman suffrage. In the final analysis, no argument against giving women the right to vote could be sustained. After fighting for more than twenty-five years, woman suffrage had become law in Utah. Women would once more vote in Utah. Newspaper editor Emme-line Wells was the first to send the good news to Susan B. Anthony. Anthony responded with sincere congratulations to all the women in the new state. “Hurrah for Utah,” her telegram read. “Number three state that establishes a genuine form of government.”
