DR. NICHOLAS GONZALEZ’S ENZYME THERAPY

For more than two decades, Nicholas Gonzalez, M.D., has refined an unconventional and promising cancer therapy that involves patient-specific dietary changes, detoxification techniques, and the use of supplements with a particular emphasis on pancreatic enzymes. Early in his medical school studies, Gonzalez had the rare opportunity to meet a true visionary, Dr. William Donald Kelley, who had recently been in the news because of his alternative cancer treatment of actor Steve McQueen. Although an orthodontist rather than a medical doctor, Kelley had been a trailblazer in the field of cancer medicine by curing himself of pancreatic cancer in the early 1960s. Through connections with the head of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Gonzalez was able to devise a means to evaluate Kelley’s work, which involved interviewing over 1,000 of Kelley’s patients. Gonzalez’ research ultimately led him to embrace Kelley’s cancer therapy and change his entire focus to become an alternative oncologist.

According to Gonzalez:

Most conventional cancer researchers propose that the disease develops from normal cells in any of our various tissues, the end result of defects in the DNA occurring spontaneously due to exposure to environmental toxins or as part of the normal aging process.… Dr. Kelley believes, however, that cancer forms only from stem cells, undifferentiated precursors located in all our various tissues, that serve as replacements for those cells lost due to normal turnover, disease, injury, or aging.… Kelley does agree with mainstream scientists that small numbers of cancer cells form in all of us each day, but only rarely do these mutants take hold and lead to clinical disease. Conventional researchers argue that the immune system, especially the natural killer cells, protect us from such malignancies. But Dr. Kelley disagrees: He claims certain pancreatic enzymes, particularly the proteolytic or protein-digesting enzymes—and not the immune system—represent the first line of defense against malignancy.430

Building on the research of his mentor, William Donald Kelley, D.D.S., Gonzalez treats his patients with enzymes derived from pig pancreas. The substance contains a type of proteolytic, or protein-degrading, enzyme that is useful in digesting the protein coating of cancer cells. This is important because it is a necessary step before the cancer cells are destroyed by the body’s immune cells. In addition, pancreatic enzymes can stimulate anticancer factors in the blood, that is, natural killer cells, T-cells, and tumor necrosis factor.

Success Rate

In 1994, Gonzalez began a study on enzyme therapy in the treatment of patients with inoperable adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. Published in 1999 in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, the study showed a significantly higher survival rate among those patients who underwent enzyme therapy. Out of the eleven patients observed in the study, nine survived one year, five lived for two years, four made it to three years, and two survived beyond four years. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most untreatable and quickly fatal cancers than befall us, so Gonzalez’ results were quite remarkable.
