Michael Novick remembered, “They basically said, you’re both working against the Klan, we need you to work together.” Factional fights were mostly backgrounded. “The push from the New Afrikans helped [us] overcome a certain amount of rivalry and turf mentality,” said Novick. The first national Committee conference was organized in Chicago. From there members of May 19th and Prairie Fire who took up the John Brown name reconstituted into a broader national organization with a specific emphasis on opposing white supremacy and supporting the New Afrikan Independence movement. During the conference the two organizations shared lessons from their local struggles and strategized on their new organizational approach: building broad coalitions with a revolutionary spirit.
