Aiden had dispatched his brothers on errands. Erik was delivering Harper’s electronics to Nick at Veritas. Drake, the brother who could convince anyone of anything, was meeting the super to convince him that their locksmith was capable of changing the lock. Clay was completing a recon of the neighborhood, and Brandon was assigned to lobby duty.

Leaving Aiden alone with Harper. Not an auspicious beginning, but he didn’t want anyone else to review Harper’s schedule.

He took out his highlighters and ran his finger across the column for this week. She had three appearances with her mother at rally’s in Portland and at the end of the week she was scheduled to go to another rally at the capitol in Salem.

He looked up to find her watching him.

“Don’t tell me,” she said. “You’re going to strike off everything.”

“I’m not that mercenary.” He smiled, but she didn’t respond. “We’ll have to evaluate these venues in person, then make a decision.”

“How to you determine that?”

“Exits. Public access. Windows. Manageable crowd size. An area our team can cover and see every inch of the room you’re in. Nothing outside at all.”

She shook her head. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad for your thoroughness and appreciate it, but I feel like not only is my whole life being exposed to you, but you’re going to be there every second of every day.”

He looked contrite for a moment then he washed it away. “I promise to let you sleep alone.” He chuckled, and she loved the sound of his laughter.

But she didn’t like the route her brain took after his comment. She shouldn’t be thinking of him and sleeping in the same sentence.

“Once we visit these venues and know where you’ll be going for the rest of the week, I’ll schedule our team assignments so you’ll know who to expect to be with you.”

“You won’t be here all the time? I mean it felt like you were planning to move in.” She laughed, but he thought it was forced.

“Can I get the addresses for each of these appearances?”

“Yes, if I had my phone, but I don’t so I can give you the name of the place and we’ll have to look it up.”

“Okay. Shoot.”

“First one is at the Chinese gardens.”

“Inside or outside?”

“I’m not sure. We’ll have to ask my mom.”

“If it’s outside, I’d like to rule it out before even going to evaluate the space.”

“I don’t mind canceling, but you’ll have to be the one to tell my mom.”

“It can’t be that hard.”

“You met her, right?” Harper shook her head. “Once she gets something into her mind she doesn’t let it go until she makes it happen. Like becoming governor. At first I thought she was crazy, but then I thought about it and knew she would accomplish it. And she did.”

“I have to admit not being up on politics and don’t know her political background.”

“She had none. Like zero other than as a college student and intern. She met my dad on a campaign and married him.
