Hosted Data Environments

Data stewarded and stored in any repository can be thought of as “hosted” in the sense that data are accessible via the web through a server-client model. Repositories serve up data in viewable or downloadable formats with the expectation that the end user will make use of the data locally—on either a personal computer or a local network. Hosted data environments, however, provide access to data in an integrated online-only user interface through which data are accessed, queried, or analyzed remotely. Common technological solutions to supporting hosted data often come in the form of cloud services, such as the Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services S3. Hosting data is especially useful for datasets that are too large to reliably download or have prohibitive technical or legal restrictions. Hosted data environments can be found across commercial, government, and academic sectors; institutions protect the economic value of their assets by limiting access and distribution of data while simultaneously encouraging use of the data. Google, for example, has several “big” datasets that are accessible through a web interface and may be analyzed dynamically.42
