Incompatible Strategies

A problem occurs when two different people have strategies that are incompatible. Let’s say you have a need for freedom. You schedule your work life to be very flexible. That is your strategy for fulfilling your need for freedom, a flexible work schedule.

Then you have a coworker who has a need for security, for example. He or she fulfills that with a different strategy by having a very organized project management. Included a detailed plan, highly structured meetings and so forth.

If you then work together those two strategies will sooner or later collide. They’re gonna crash and that’s where we get the conflict. That is where the conflict occurs. The problem remains, the conflict remains, for as long as you stay on the strategy level.

You need to be able to look past the strategies and look at the needs behind. When you can look at the needs behind in a non-judgemental, non-defensive way you can build the trust to have a more open communication. When that trust is present you can look together at what other strategies you can employ to fulfill your needs. Strategies that are compatible.

My definition of conflict is there about incompatible strategies on the way to fulfilling a need and that collision that happens between those strategies, that is where we get the conflict.
