The soldiers have almost all been sick and most of them continue to do so, as do also my servants. The poor cook is so bad that he can’t work at all, nor so much as lift his hand. This is very uncomfortable for us, for Captain Foy and I have to do our own cooking. You would laugh to see us. Before the end of the voyage the drinking-water was foul . 84

Eventually, the rest of the Brunswick troops arrived in September with 2,000 soldiers. During the terrible sea voyage, 19 had died and 131 were sick with scurvy. They then found their way to General von Riedesel’s forces along the Richelieu River, where they wintered as he drilled them to bring their marksmanship up to par with the Americans; the general had noted that the Americans were better marksmen. 85

Meanwhile, Baroness von Riedesel decided to join her husband in the colonies. She was traveling with her daughters Augusta (four years and nine months old), Frederika (two) and baby Caroline (ten weeks) on a voyage that would take her to England, over the ocean to Canada and then to America.
