Well, that was fun. Fm glad I ran into you, Casey,” Nancy said as they headed out of the elevator for their third-floor suite.

Casey smiled. “You needed some laughs with dinner?”

Nancy grinned as she nodded. “Yeah, as a matter of fact, I did.”

“Come on in for a sec,” Casey said, opening the door to her room. “Let’s talk some more.”

Nancy was happy she’d run into Casey when she’d gone to the cafeteria for an early dinner. Between Bess’s problems, tension with both Jake and her dad, and George’s stolen loan money, Nancy needed a little fun time with someone.

“How did you get my phone number, Mike?” Stephanie was speaking into the phone as Nancy and Casey entered. She sat stiffly on the edge of

her bed, gripping the receiver with one hand and chewing a shiny red nail on the other.

Casey gave Nancy a look as they tiptoed inside.

“No, I’m sorry, but I can’t,” Stephanie was saying in a strained voice. Nancy noticed Stephanie’s beautiful, tanned forehead was furrowed with worry. “I made a mistake, Mike. I’m involved with someone else. Okay? I can’t see you again— ever. ”

Nancy stretched out on Casey’s bed and propped her head up on one elbow. Stephanie scowled and put down the phone abruptly.

“Ooh . . .” Nancy wagged a finger playfully at Stephanie. “Wait until we tell Jonathan that the guys still won’t leave you alone. He’s going to be soooo jealous.”

“Hey, Nancy”—Casey nudged Nancy in the side, giving Stephanie a sly look—“give Stephanie a break. She’s never said no to a guy before in her fife.”

Stephanie lit a cigarette and inhaled deeply, glowering at Casey. Nancy knew that Casey had said something that was true, and Stephanie couldn’t deny it.

“Anyway, don’t blame the guys,” Casey said. “Stephanie’s the one who’s doing the chasing.”

Stephanie’s brown eyes seemed to crackle with anger. “Keep your nose out of my business, Casey,” she said tightly, standing up. She rubbed the sides of her arms nervously, looking out the window while Casey and Nancy sat still in surprised silence.

“Sorry, Steph,” Nancy said at last. “We didn’t mean to—”

“And if you say anything to Jonathan about this,” Stephanie snapped, turning to give them a hard stare, “I’ll kill you both, I swear it.”

“Stephanie!” Casey gasped. “We were just joking around.”

Nancy was stunned. “Of course we would never say anything about other guys being interested in you,” Nancy reassured her quickly. “We know how much Jonathan means to you. He’s a great guy.”

“Nancy!” She heard her roommate, Kara Ver- beck, calling down the hall. “Phone!”

Reluctantly, Nancy left, wishing she had more time to talk to Stephanie. It was clear Jonathan had gotten under Stephanie’s skin—the first guy Nancy had seen get close to Stephanie all year. She could tell Stephanie wasn’t used to being vulnerable. Maybe she was in love, Nancy thought to herself. Stephanie was usually so in control. And nothing could make a person feel more out of control than being madly in love.

“It’s your father,” Kara told her when she was back in her room.
