Three hours later, I slipped into Vinyl Tunes, the record shop David worked at part-time. Alan’s comments were completely out of line, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what he’d said. What if he was right? Curious Beth had to do some investigating.

The afternoon was David’s usual shift, so I hid behind a rack of jazz records and kept a steady eye on the door, watching for Abbie. After about ten minutes, I started getting fidgety. Both school work and laundry needed my attention at home, so I didn’t have much time to waste.

To pass the time, I flipped through the records in front of me. John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck…

“Is David in, please?” said a high-pitched female voice.

My heart nearly pounded out of my chest. Cautiously, I peeked around the shelf to get a view of the front. Standing next to the counter with her back to me was a young girl wearing a knit hat over her scraggly brown hair, a wrinkled denim jacket, a long brown skirt, and black boots. A man answered her in a gruff voice, but I couldn’t make out what he said.

“Are you sure?” she squeaked, making me cringe. “I was really hoping I could talk to him.”

Impulsively, I stepped away from the rack and starting walking towards her, only to have someone yank my arm and pull me back. Fighting my sky-high adrenaline rush, I whirled around to find David’s co-worker standing in front of me with narrowed eyes.

“Roger,” I muttered.

“She’s a loon, Beth. Don’t bother with her,” he whispered.

“I’d like to strangle her,” I said softly through clenched teeth.

He grinned. “Your husband knows you very well.”

“Why do you say that?”

“He predicted you’d come round, wanting to see this girl,” he said quietly.

“And let me guess, he told you to watch for me.” The door flew open as Abbie exited in a huff. I never even got to see her face.

“He made it quite clear he did not want you confronting her. He’s very protective of you, in case you haven’t noticed.”

“Yeah, I’ve noticed a little.” So it was all true. Suddenly I felt horrible for doubting David.

“Go on home and don’t worry about that girl. She’ll give up after a time and move on to the next bloke—hopefully soon. David’s quite uncomfortable with it.”

“All right. Thanks, Roger,” I mumbled, slinking away.

I trudged home, sloshing through the melting snow and wishing I were back in sunny California. What had I done to my life? I’d moved across the world, married a foreigner, and now I lived with his parents while he toured the country with his band. It sounded idiotic. But I didn’t regret one ounce of it, not even when David scolded me later over the phone after I’d admitted going to the record shop.

This was the life I’d chosen, and I wasn’t about to look back.
