In rare instances, fiber clusters of 10–20 fibers showing strong NCAM immunoreactivity are found in muscle biopsies of both young and old subjects. These fibers also show internal dystrophin and centralized nuclei and are negative for both MHCn and MHCe. We have used an antibody against collagen XXII, which labels tissue junctions [35], and confirmed these fibers to be myotendinous junction-related fibers, as all muscle fibers have been shown to express NCAM in a short band close to the tendon [31].
