Nettie sat by the window. The Texas heat billowed through the curtains, the discomfort heating her concerns. Reed said he cared for her. He said he loved her, but how could he really know?

And yet, deep inside her, she believed she felt the same way. Perhaps once they began their lives together, their budding love would bloom. She’d never given her feelings to another and wasn’t sure on how to go about it.

She looked out the window and saw Reed and his deputy walking toward the west end of town. A layer of dust stained the air. She craned her neck out the window. A wild bunch of cowboys rode through town as if the devil himself were after them.

A quick glance back to Reed sent her heart in a gallop. He was following them. Going after those wild men so quick to use their guns and fists.

Nettie’s breath caught as her mother’s words attacked her mind.

“No. No. No.” She tried to shove the troubling thoughts away but only managed to relegate them to the back. Tears moistened her eyes.

A knock on her door pulled her from her the window.

“Yes?”

“Nettie, dear. I thought you might like to work on your wedding dress. I know Saturdays are busy for the Sheriff so he won’t be around much today.”

She hurried and flung open the door. “Oh, yes. That would be wonderful.”

Mya touched her cheek. “You were crying. Is anything wrong?”

Nettie took hold of Mya’s hand. “I’m so glad you came up when you did. I saw that bunch of wild cowboys ride through town and then Reed and Spencer walked in their direction. I have to admit, I am so thankful that Reed won’t be sheriff much longer.”

“I can understand that, but Reed’s been a sheriff for some time. He can handle rough men. I understand though. Fear can be such an overwhelming force. After my husband died, I could barely move. I saw death wherever I looked. Living alone was too hard. We’d done everything right, and I couldn’t get past that God had let me down with Arthur’s death. I lost any trust I had in the Good Lord.”

Nettie wiped her eyes. “And what did you do? Can you really trust Him?”

“Yes, dear. The Good Lord is closer to me than Arthur and I ever had been. I hear him in the times that I become still, comforting me, assuring me that I am His.”

“But you are alone.”

“No, dear Nettie. I am not alone. The Lord is with me. I admit, sometimes it feels as if He is far off, but other times. … Other times I feel Him and know Him so deeply. The Lord gives me my joy.”

Nettie walked to the window and hoped Reed was safe. “How do you get that trust, Mya?”

“Find yourself a still, quiet place and pour out your heart to Him. And then be still and listen.”

She looked at the petite, white-haired woman. “That’s all?”

Mya gave her a mysterious but content smile. “Yes, dear.
