IT CAN HAPPEN IN ANY INDUSTRY
The dominant culture of an industry or corporation might not have values that support bullying, but that doesn't mean bullying won't happen.
An Indian woman who had a highly placed position in a small company went to her manager after she had accepted additional responsibilities. She realized she was working nine to ten hours a day and not getting time for lunch. No one else in the company was working those long hours or having to give up their meal time. She asked her manager for one of the responsibilities to be removed from her load so she could concentrate on a project that the company had prioritized.
Instead of her manager applauding her demanding work, her initiative, and her creative effort to develop this new project, he attacked her personally and expressed dissatisfaction with her performance. He had never negatively evaluated her before.
She was amazed by his reaction and was so dismayed that she decided to resign on the spot. She has since learned that her responsibilities were spread among ten people within the company. Her manager saved money by not replacing her position, which made her wonder if he had a financial incentive to force her out of her job.
It's possible that ethnic prejudice also fueled this bullying. The woman noted that the manager looked surprised when she stood up for herself. He probably believed a stereotypical perspective that Indian women are more docile than women of other ethnicities. He may have thought, “I can do this to her, and she's not going to stand up to me. If she does, it will be in such a mild form that I won't have any problems dealing with it at all.”
