SOURCE: Adapted from John Burke and Ellyssa Kroski, Makerspaces: A Practical Guide for Librarians, 2nd ed. (Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2018), 36–37.

The other factor affecting the physical layout of makerspaces is the nature of the making activities that will take place there. Some kinds of making are especially dirty, like woodworking; or smelly, like painting; or noisy, like recording a band with a drummer; or potentially dangerous, like welding. Not every makerspace is going to involve these types of making, but if library staff members want to offer them, then there will need to be space available that can be easily cleaned, soundproofed, ventilated, and made secure for makers’ safety. Activities that might seem difficult to offer regularly in a more open makerspace setting could still be done on occasion when conditions are right.
