Ph. 3.1: The Caribbean sponge, Neofibularia nolitangere (Source: Joseph Pawlik, from [35] with permission).

Ph. 3.2: The fire sponge, Tedania ignis (Source: Joseph Pawlik, from [35] with permission).

Symptoms after intensive contact with sponges can include reddening of the skin, a stinging sensation, erythema, swelling, blistering, and stiffness of the finger joints. The symptoms last 2–3 days, but the tingling and stabbing symptoms may persist much longer.

Affected skin areas should be washed off intensively with water. Skeletal needles stuck in the skin should be removed out using an adhesive strip or sticking plaster if possible. Itching may be treated with antihistamines. Inflammatory responses may be attenuated by applying creams or lotions containing glucocorticoids.
