Backbench business committee

Introduced after the 2010 general election, this committee has the power to reserve space for debate in the House of Commons. It is also responsible for the Government’s e-petitions website: in an e-petition, any member of the public can highlight an issue and if the petition gains more than 100,000 signatures the committee will arrange for it to be debated by MPs. This was the case in October 2011, when 139,000 people had signed an e-petition asking for MPs to debate the issues surrounding the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 in which 96 Liverpool Football Club supporters were killed due to poor crowd control.

ICT task

Go to http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/.

Look up some of the current open petitions. Remember that if a petition gains more than 100,000 signatures, the government has to respond.
