Story Persuasiveness and Melodrama

The social problems formula story is melodramatic, featuring one-dimensional representations of experience and characters, involving plots of struggles between good and evil, and told in a vocabulary of clear and simple moral absolutes (Brooks 1976; Frye 1957; Singer 2001; Wagner-Pacifici 1986). While literary critics deride the melodramatic genre for its simplicity, sensationalism, predictable plot lines, and one-dimensional characters (Brooks 1976; Frye 1957), it is precisely these attributes that lead to story persuasiveness in a world where meaning is troubled. Furthermore, and not to be discounted, because the excessiveness of melodrama can be riveting, this story form is a favorite for media which means such stories will be widely disseminated.
