What comes next?

The sort of inquiry that contributes to this characterization of problems encourages people to orient themselves to their problems as “investigative reporters.” This role can then be extended by supporting people to develop a detailed account of the consequences of anorexia nervosa (or of whatever definition is preferred), of the operations and activities of this problem, of the consequences of these operations and activities to the person’s life, and an account of what these consequences might reflect about the “agenda” of the problem for the person’s life and relationships.

In the yet further development of this investigative reporter role, people can be encouraged to develop an exposé of the contexts of life that sponsor anorexia nervosa. This would be an exposé of the discourses of life and identity that foster anorexia nervosa, including the practices of the self and practices of relationship that are associated with these discourses, and of the complicity of social institutions in this. Externalizing conversations of this sort are well-suited to bring forth the politics of people’s experience of these forces, and I regard this also to be a priority in therapeutic practice.
