Chapter 12
âLisette!â
For a heart-stopping moment, Conall didnât see her for the cold rain stinging his eyes, until Cameron, running alongside him, shouted in his ear.
âThere, by the wall!â
Conall breathed a prayer of thanks, but she looked so small and helpless crouching near the ground with her sodden lavender gown blending into the gray stones.
He called her name again, but she clearly couldnât hear him over the howling wind. She didnât lift her head until he stood over her and reached down to pull her into his arms, Lisette blinking against the driving rain.
âOh, Conallâ¦I couldnât follow you, my ankleââ
âShh, lass, Iâve got you.â Conall swept her up and held her close, Cameron clapping him on the back and then sprinting alongside him as they splashed through rivulets of water and mud to reach the keep.
Aislinn awaited them at the entranceway, Sorcha still hiccoughing with tears and holding onto her while serving women rushed forward with armloads of towels.
âTake her into the hall where the fire is stoked and blazing!â Aislinn shouted over another clap of thunder, but Conall shook his head. Lisette shivered so fiercely against him that he feared for her, a glance at her ashen pallor and bluish lips, her wet hair plastered to her head, making him move instead for the tower steps.
âFollow him, go!â came Cameronâs roared command, Conall glancing over his shoulder to see three maidservants hurrying after him while his brother shook water from himself and took a towel from his wife.
Cameron would be fine, and Sorcha, too, with Aislinn tending after themâbut Lisette? As Conall raced up the steps, nearly slipping for the water dripping from him, his concern for her only mounted when she began to shiver even more violently.
âWeâre almost there, lassâalmost there,â he murmured against her wet hair.
He shivered, too, though he had faced worse on the battlefield when there had been no shelter from thunderstorms at all other than a sodden breacan over his head. He kicked open the door to their chamber, making Lisette gasp, and strode inside, roaring out commands to the maidservants hard on his heels.
âStoke the fire! Pull back the covers on the bed!â
A flurry of commotion surrounded them as Conall set Lisette down on her feet in front of the fireplace. Without any more delay, he reached down to grab the hem of her wet tunic and pulled the garment over her head.
Logs crackled and flared into a bright warming blaze at the prodding of a stout serving maid with an iron poker, while the other two rushed forward with towels, only to have Conall grab them from their hands. It was him that swiftly dried Lisette from her head to her toes while doing his best to focus upon his task though she stood there naked and shaking.
Her beautiful body limned in firelight and her widened eyes never straying from his face, Conall swallowing hard that he would feel his lower body tighten with desire at such a dire moment.
Her lips still blue
