She sighed. “Yes, but now I see that you need to be in her life just as much as me. We’re the only ones left to tell her how amazing Angie and Stefan were. To show her pictures and help her understand what truly remarkable people she had for parents. But you’ll be there as dad when it counts.”

“Tottle!” Emma said and rubbed her eyes.

“I think this little girl is ready to go down,” Simon murmured.

“I’ll get her bottle and you can put her down while we watch some TV,” Leila suggested. “You stretch out on the sofa with her.”

“There was a time my Friday nights were much more of a party than this,” Simon said. He lifted his feet up and got settled on his side with his back against the plush cushions on the sofa. Emma was tucked securely in the crook of his arms and sucked her pacifier while looking up at him. She babbled around the plastic soother and Simon popped it out of her mouth. Emma grabbed his hand and brought the pacifier back other lips before he did it again and then the game was on.

Leila watched them for a minute before asking, “Do you miss those wild Friday nights?”

Simon spoke without taking his eyes off the baby. “Not in the least.”

Leila came back with a warm bottle of milk for her daughter. When Emma went down for the night, she planned to have a talk with Simon. She felt certain that it would all work out.

“Does she still feel warm to you?” he asked worriedly as she handed him the bottle.

Emma took the bottle eagerly and began to drink while Leila put her hand on the baby’s forehead. “She could be, but with teething a low grade fever is a part of it. I’ll keep monitoring her through the night.”

“There was a woman in the baby boutique who was coughing up a storm, do you think she gave Emma a virus?” Simon asked.

“Babies are resilient, they bounce if you drop them,” Leila laughed at his shocked expression. “I’m kidding you, that’s a joke I learned from the old doctor that had the practice before me. It means that kids generally can throw off viruses pretty easily.” Leila stroked the soft skin of Emma’s arm and the baby held on to her finger. “But we’ll make sure you’re alright, won’t we pretty Emma?”

She smiled when the tiny girl smiled around the nipple of her bottle. She met Simon’s gaze and he winked at her. Leila grinned and went to sit in the recliner and picked up the remote to turn on the TV. After a little back and forth they decided on the movie Alien Vs Predator with both rooting for Predator to win. She must have fallen asleep, because Simon was shaking her shoulders and when she looked over to the TV, the credits were rolling for the end of the movie.

“Where’s Emma?” she asked huskily.

“In bed and all tucked in,” Simon replied. He held out his hand and she took it, and he pulled her up easily against him.
