There has never been a time when a clear, well-articulated and viable approach to museum practice (and especially history practice as a now dominant discipline) has been more needed. Curators can indulge in curatorial rhetoric and convince themselves that they can get by on established museum tradition. But there is a choice – either to remain content with the way things are, quietly witness the decay and politely ignore yawning gaps in the record, or to become much more certain of the criteria for and worth of collecting, and more confident in doing it well. This is as much, if not more, a matter of approach and competence as it is a matter of resources.

Whether museums concentrate on the maintenance of a physical record or elect to take the more adventurous route with the capture of integrated information, there has to be a conscious procedure and a demonstrably high level of achievement. Without a coherent and committed approach, many museums will have nothing much to offer the public, except dust and dilapidation and an awful lot of hollow promises.
